edit angst

Woke up and saw that last one. Had to spend a few more minutes on it.

Something else I saw on the way home.

Speedy

The Northern California coast is the most beautiful and dramatic place I've ever lived. Tried to commit the sunset through the fog tonight to memory as I drove up Highway 1.

Riddle of steel

As I was drawing it, early on, it started to look to me like Thulsa doom. So I steered it a bit that way. Too finicky, this one. Not sure when it happens, but it's a bad habit of mine I have to work on. The life ebbs away as I noodle.

Natural Habitat

He's really quite harmless. Unless you're a shrub.
No B&W underpainting this time. Needed a break.

Slightly different

Thanks to Sam Nielson's comment on the last post, the old Canhead tutorial and some other suggestions I received via email I tried a slightly different approach (Autoselect and preserve transparency). All this layered business does end up with a more complex color palette by it's very nature. Even if I don't end up sticking with this process I will definitely be taking away many things that I love about it. I think it's healthy to throw a wrench in your process once in a while just to get you to think differently. For now, I just need to understand more about it.

Just a super quickie test of color over an umber value painting. Also used a textured "charcoal" brush.

Matching Accessories

Same thing. Over tonal under-painting. Harder for me, somehow w/smaller detail. I also fudged the light sourcing badly and I think that hosed it early on.

Nymph

Another underpainting study. Uplaoded the value sketch too. Must have flipped it somewhere along the line. Huh. Crazy anatomy here and there. Oops.

Mutton chops

Another one over a B&W underpainting. Can't seem to get rid of that "hand colored photo" feel. I may try one that's a bit more monochrome local color next and wash in variation.
I had to wash opaque color in to bring the ugly "grayed" parts back to life in this one. I guess that's not a horrible thing, tho.

Spacesuit

Not happy with it, but I think I learned some things from it.
