Color?
I'm always surprised and often frustrated by the color differences between monitors. Anyone have a hardware calibration system they're happy with? I've been looking at those spyder ones and they seem popular.

I'm also really frustrated with the differences between monitors and seriously, I never found a good solution. Maybe one day...
Let me know if you find a good solution. Feels like I'm painting blind sometimes... and then I try to print it out? Eagh.

Brilliant piccy !! I also notice differences between monitors with brightness,I do work on my monitor then view it on a mates and I wonder why I can't see some of the detail !!
Always color problems with different monitors... But on mine, your picture is really a success, congratulation!
Fantastic work like usually Mark. Like Pascal said, you guys inspire me as well, you, Marka nd Sarah are my dail cup of tea in the mornings. It gets me going. By the way, I found pascal's site the other day and watched all the animations...great job.

I just calibrate my screen to my printer. That's what I really care about... is how it prints out.

I don't know Mark this looks really great on my moniter! I don't really have a solution that works well for me. If you find something that works, please let us know. I'm still struggling with trying to the colors somewhat similar from my tablet pc to my main computer moniter. Thanks for all the great posts!

I just found your blog this morning, I looked at every piece, what a treat!! I read someones' post(on another blog) that said they couldn't find any good artwork on the web... What?!?! I find so much I get sick with excitement! Not only am I inspired and challenged to do better, it is wonderful to find others experiencing the same problems as I do... monitor calibration among them. I remember the first time I saw my site on another moniter...yetch! I had to run and fix it quick. Your work looks great on my monitor. I'm getting ready for a print job and my palms are sweating because I don't know what the first results are going to be, but now I don't feel so bad, maybe it's not because I'm stupid, it just might be a problem everyone faces.
regarding colors and screens, this a fairly technical topic. No monitor is the same, everybody knows that CRT screens have a wider range of colors than TFT unless you buy the most expensive TFT ones but one important thing you need to know is the difference between PCs and MAcs.
By default Mac and PC are set to a different gamma, Macs are set to 1.8 and pc to 2.2. What it means is that a painting saved in jpeg format on mac will appear darker on PC. When talking about Jpegs, a color calibrator like the Spyder wouldn't help much since you can't embed Gamma values when using the Jpeg format.
Now if we are talking about working in photoshop, it is possible to embed this information along with ICC profiles on tiff or targa files and this is where you might want to use one of those Spyders.
I don't how does it look for the others, but for me it's reaaally nice, your colors are very inspiring. I love their softness -if that word exist, sry about my english - and how they feet together. Really.

In my experience for still images or illustration, you create the image for the end result - if it's for printing, work with the printer(s) to make sure your colors calibrate with their output; if it's specifically for the computer or web viewing, then pull colors from the web palette and work with those as the primary colors (as limited as they are). Haven't really worked with any calibration systems in my professional work except when I went back to school a few years ago, but then I don't do any film or tv post-production at the moment where it would likely be most beneficial.
In any case, Mark, most of the concept images I've seen of yours and various others on blogs around the world are quite nice on screen, although occasionally without much contrast or mostly medium tones...like medium to dark gray instead of black. :)
