Hey, I like this. Nice possibility for an interesting Halloween illustration. At the same time, it in some way reminds me of one of those SIGGRAPH animation shorts I saw a few years back...can't remember the name, but it's definitely the nose that makes me think of it. :)

Also, even with your quickies, do you favour the 'tonal / monotone thing first, then colour on top' approach?
I'e tried this, didn't get on too well, but this is surely just my meagre skills.

I just got the pattern from some PS brush I made with lots of scatter and flipping and random brush strokes. Then I went to painter. It was B&W to start, but I don't always start that way. In fact, it's still rather awkward for me to get decent results with a purely tonal underpainting. Working on it, though.
